From Domus Supermarket to Solvian Cowork: a story of architecture, memory and the future
Before establishing itself as a collaborative workspace, the building that now houses Solvian Coworking was once Domus Supermarket—an iconic project of contemporary Portuguese architecture, closely linked to Álvaro Siza Vieira’s vision and conceived, from the outset, in dialogue with the city and its people.
Designed by Álvaro Siza Vieira, Domus Supermarket stood out at the time as an innovative urban facility. More than a simple retail space, the building already reflected the architect’s sensitive, humanist approach, where functionality is combined with careful attention to scale, natural light and the relationship with the surrounding environment.
Siza Vieira’s original sketches reveal a creative process attentive to detail, the flow of circulation and the user experience. Domus established itself as an open, accessible space integrated into the community’s everyday life.
For years, Domus Supermarket was part of the routine of those who shopped there, worked there or simply passed by. Over time, its original function was lost, but the building retained a strong identity, filled with memories and potential.
From urban rehabilitation to adaptation into a coworking space
The creation of Solvian Coworking began with a clear vision: to preserve the building’s architectural heritage and adapt it to new ways of working. In an increasingly flexible, collaborative and digital world, it made sense to bring the space back to life while respecting its past.
The rehabilitation intervention sought to maintain the building’s original character, enhancing natural light, materials and the spaciousness of the interiors, while adapting them to contemporary needs for comfort, technology and functionality.
Solvian Coworking was born from the ambition to create an open, shared work environment that goes beyond Solvian’s own internal needs. Designed as a coworking space, it is open to freelancers, digital nomads and companies, fostering an ecosystem where meeting, sharing ideas and collaboration arise naturally.
We believe that spaces influence how we work and relate to one another. Working in a building with history, designed by one of Portugal’s greatest architects, is also a source of daily inspiration.
The former Domus Supermarket is now an example of how architecture can endure over time, adapting without losing its essence. At Solvian Coworking, past and present come together to shape new ideas, projects and collaborations.
